Leonardo Da Vinci Bio

Leonardo Da Vinci was born on April 15th, 1452 in Tuscany, which was during the Renaissance period. He received a basic education in Latin, Geometry, and math. When Da Vinci was 14 years old, he became an apprentice to Andrea di Cione, under whom he learned many technical skills such as chemistry, carpentry, and mechanics, and artistic skills like sculpting, drawing, modelling, and painting. He was eventually accepted into a guild of artists and doctors, the guild of St. Luke.

Leonardo became a professional artist around 1478, when he started being asked to create art for certain places, such as in January 1478, to paint an altarpiece for the chapel of St Bernard. He was also a very talented musician, mathematician, anatomist, geologist, inventor, and became an engineer and architect for the Italian military, among many other things. Da Vinci’s most famous works of art are the paintings the Mona Lisa, The Last Supper, and his drawing, the Vitruvian Man, is  seen as a political icon. He is thought to be one of the most diversely talented people to have ever lived, and is known as one of the world’s greatest painters, or artists in general. Da Vinci’s main artistic influences stemmed from Christian Humanist culture, which Florence was at the centre of, realism, and emotion. The artists in particular who influence his work were the sculptor Donatello, Massaccio, Ghiberti, and his teacher, Verrocchio.

Mural Project!!

So for the grade 12 mural project, everyone already has groups or wanted to work alone (I had no idea people were planning it so far in advance), so I have a different idea:
Mini murals for a bunch of the offices! I still have to do some sketches for actual murals that I could possibly do, but I’m already so excited about this idea for the offices.

I made a list of a bunch of mini murals I’ve thought of to possibly make so far: Main Office, Dean’s Office, Staff Room, Jewish Studies Office, Centre for Differentiated Learning (that would take a long time), Art room, Drama room, bathrooms, Guidance, Student Activities, Science Office, and gym office.
So far I have eight sketches, and a few that I’m really happy with. I think I can get either four or five done in the span of six months (October-April ish).
I still kind of can’t believe the school is willing to let students paint on the walls for an assignment…

Some of where I got the mini murals idea from is a project one girl did last year with themed room numbers according to what classes are taught in that room and painting it on the doors. I also looked up a few mural artists from a list we got in class. Textbooks were a big help too, as the pictures gave me ideas for things I could transform into letters, especially with science. A few of my friends helped out with the physics stuff too.
I’m going to post some pictures of my sketches once I get a few approved!

Artists’ Statement: Crap In Food

Rachel Leboff

For my Grade 11 art Final Summative, I chose to create art about the crap in food. My inspiration came from seeing the movie “Fed Up” which was about all the crap that people consume today, and how everyone is getting fat. I also just know a lot about eating healthy and stuff like that, because of my family. Originally, I just wanted to make something involving food, and then I thought of Kraft Dinner because it’s been my favourite food since I was six.

To execute my project I first bought spray paint, and lots of noodles, and coated all the noodles in it. I think they turned out pretty well, and not looking like food, which is what I was going for. Then I took a large box of Multi-Grain Cheerios, and painted that to look like a giant box of Kraft Dinner, which took a really long time. I also bought a giant spoon and bowl, and piled the noodles into it. The noodles I think make you look twice, because once you really see it, it definitely does not look like something anyone would want to eat.

Impressionist Paintings Artist Biography – Monet

Oscar-Claude Monet was born in France on November 14th, 1840. He was a founder of French Impressionist painting, aiming to capture mostly landscapes. This movement’s philosophy was to express the painter’s perceptions through nature, almost entirely through creating paintings of “plein-air” landscapes. His parents had not wanted him to become an artist, rather to join their family’s grocery business.

His first impressionist exhibition occurred in 1874, when he met with many similar style artists in Paris, France. his painting, Impression, Sunrise, completed in 1872, gave the impressionist artist group in France their name. Monet was always very focused on lighting of a scene when he painted. He would not paint anything unless the lighting and angle were perfect.

From 1883 on, he lived in Giverny, and began to produce paintings of ponds, including one of his most famous, Water Lillies, which was started in 1899. His water lilies paintings turned into a series, which he worked on for over 10 years. Some of the final water lillies he painted now reside in galleries in France.

Although he began to go blind, Monet painted until the end of his life. He died on December 5th 1926, but still remains a very famous and influential impressionist painter. Now his paintings are in art galleries all over the world.
